Meet at the Preserve parking lot. The Preserve is on the corner of South Westnedge Avenue and South Shore Drive, a little over a mile south of Centre Street. Turn east onto South Shore Drive and the entrance to the parking lot is almost immediately to the left.
West Lake Nature Preserve has both woodland and wetland habitats that are good for migrant birds. The two wetland areas offer open views, one over a boggy/marshy area and one over West Lake. We’ll be looking for early migrating warblers, vireos, thrushes, and others. On West Lake, we may see some ducks, loons, or terns. We will walk about a mile on easy trails, but parts of the boardwalks through the bog and wetlands are usually wet, even ankle deep or higher. Knee-high waterproof footwear is highly recom-mended. Bring binoculars and field guides. Insect repellent may be worth having along as well. The trip should be about two hours.
