ASK Participates in Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Zugunruhe Festival

Zugunruhe is the German word for the migratory drive in animals, especially birds. The Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC), with help from ASK and other local organizations, is offering a daylong celebration of this natural phenomenon, and it’s perfectly timed during fall bird migration: Saturday, September 10, 10:30 AM-3 PM! Admission to the Nature Center is free that day, and there are events planned for people of all ages. Enjoy the grand opening of KNC’s first original exhibit entitled Up in the Air: Birds Navigating the Anthropocene. Take part in bird banding, a children’s parade, face painting, and a dance workshop. Visit local artists’ booths and hear music by local performers with the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music. Attend lectures by Dr. Sharon Gill, Meg Heft, and ASK’s very own Gail Walter, as well as a birds of prey demonstration. Swing by the food trucks before attending a bird walk led by ASK members and then take a guided hike through the KNC prairie. You’ll be as exhausted as a migrant bird by the end of this exciting day celebrating Zugunruhe!
