Meet at the Oakland Park n’ Ride at 8:00 am to carpool or meet at the site at 8:30 am. The address is 28534 49th Street, Paw Paw, MI. Look for a white farm house on the north side of the road, pull in past the farm house and park between the house and outbuildings. Please note, this is private property and is not open to the public outside of these field trips. Public access will become available once SWMLC completes the purchase.

Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC) is in the process of acquiring a new preserve between Mattawan and Paw Paw. The purchase agreement between SWMLC and the landowners for 187 acres were completed in mid-April so field trips were not able to be confirmed until after the ASK newsletter went to print. These two trips are a special opportunity to view the currently private property that includes frontage on three lakes, extensive wetlands and rolling forests. Acquisition is not expected to be completed until the end of 2016.

SWMLC conservation and stewardship director and ASK member, Nate Fuller, will lead birders along dirt trails with occasional slopes to Lime Lake and back. Round trip from the parking area to Lime Lake is about 2 miles. There are good viewing points of another lake and wetlands along the way if birders do not want to go the whole distance. Last spring ASK volunteers Russ Schipper, Nate Strong and Kent Martin assisted in documenting 97 species on this property to help secure grant support. The variety of habitat provides opportunity for finding a variety of warblers, vireos, flycatchers, waterfowl, woodpeckers, and much more.
