Meet at 7:30 AM at the Oakland Drive Park and Ride by I-94 to group into vehicles to make the 75-minute drive to Berrien County.
This fairly new park has several different areas to explore. The parking lot can actually be amazing for warblers and other songbirds. We’ll walk a short trail through woods onto a boardwalk quite high above the river and surrounding marsh. Waterbirds, rails, bitterns, raptors, and others can be seen or heard while you feel like you’re in the trees with the warblers, vireos, orioles, and tanagers at eye level. There is also a boardwalk that goes right down into the marsh and out to the river. (This is accessed by a series of stairs that we will need to climb down and then up or alternately a winding, gradual path.) Another short trail leads through the woods and then back to the parking lot. Bring binoculars, field guides, and insect repellent. Dress for the weather. We should be back to Kalamazoo by 1:00 at the latest.
