Meet at the Centre Street and US-131 commuter parking lot in Portage.
It may not be encouraging to some that on this same trip a few years ago virtually nothing was seen at the sod farm. But it is the best place in the area to see both of the target species and it can’t be worse than a few years ago. We would not try it again if it were not a good trip with neat birds. We will car pool to the sod farm, which is near Decatur, and look from the roadside for our target species. Buff-breasted Sandpiper is distinctly possible, the American Golden Plovers are almost expected, and a Merlin is not out of the question. IF our target birds are absent again, we’ll do some roadside birding at wetlands in Prairie Ronde Township in the southwest corner of Kalamazoo County. We should be back by 11:00 AM.
