Meet at Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery just outside the Visitors’ Center. On M-43, go six miles west of US-131 and turn left (south) onto Fish Hatchery Road (County Road 652). Turn right (west) into the visitor parking lot – the second drive you come to – after one-tenth of a mile.

The North American Big Sit is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event hosted by Bird Watcher’s Digest and founded by the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club. First you find a good spot for bird watching, preferably one with good views of a variety of habitats and lots of birds. Next you create an imaginary circle 17 feet in diameter and sit inside the circle for 24 hours, counting all the bird species you see or hear. Find a spot, sit in it, have fun. Our spot will be the observation deck on the south side of the main pond at the Hatchery. The North American Big Sitis like a Big Day or a Birdathon in that the object is to tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard. The difference is that you stay within that 17-foot circle instead of moving around. And instead of doing it for the whole 24 hours, we’ll do a “medium sit,” just two periods of two hours each. You might want to bring a chair in addition to binoculars, a field guide, and spotting scope if you have one. Dress for the weather.
