Join Loreen Niewenhuis for the 2nd presentation of ASK’s new program season as she introduces us to the Great Lakes and describes her personal interactions with them. She will take you to islands in each of the five Great Lakes and their connecting waters. In words, photos, and video, you’ll explore the geology of the largest system of fresh water lakes in the world and learn why there are so many islands in the Great Lakes basin. She’ll reveal how these islands are diverse in both geological underpinnings and in the life forms existing on them.

Loreen set out to explore her favorite place, Lake Michigan, by walking all the way around it. She wanted to know it completely and to “record it in her muscles and bones.” This 1,000-mile hike was followed by two more epic journeys and a trilogy of award-winning books about her Great Lakes adventures. She is an author, adventurer, and Great Lakes expert. She travels widely giving dynamic presentations about these vast, inland seas.

You are invited to join us to meet and hear Loreen on October 22, at the People’s Church, 1758 North 10th Street, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.
