To get to the Briscoe colony, drive south on Portage Road to Barton Lake Drive West (formerly South) and turn left. Follow the road to 15311 Barton Lake Drive West. Or take US-131 south through Schoolcraft to XY Avenue, then left to Portage Road. Head south about 50 yards and then turn left on Barton Lake Drive West.

Spend an evening along the shore of Barton Lake in Vicksburg, enjoying the graceful flight, cheerful song, and colony activities of Purple Martins engaged in busily caring for their young. Field trip participants will learn about colony management of the 30-plus nesting pairs by assisting with such activities as nest checks to count chicks and nest changes to promote healthier young and a higher fledge rate. Other species we may see on the lake include Belted Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons, Black Terns, and swallows.
