Meet at the commuter parking lot on the northwest corner of I-94 and Oakland Drive in Portage.
For the third straight year, a Townsend’s Solitaire is wintering at Warren Dunes State Park. This Western species is a known wanderer, but its return to the same spot on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan is an interesting phenomenon. We will have a 1/2 mile hike over fairly level terrain to the search location, although soft sand and snow may make the hike a bit more strenuous. We may walk one to one and a half miles total. Plan to spend several hours searching―although the location is well known, this bird is a magician, able to appear and disappear at will. Dress warmly! If the group is large enough, volunteer drivers will be needed to help carpool. (A state park sticker is required for park entry.) Expect to be back by around noon.
