Water Birds at the South Haven Pier

April 5, 2015 @ 8:15 am – 10:30 am
South Haven North Pier
Russ Schipper

Meet at the north beach about 8:15 AM (or 7:30 if
carpooling) to about 10:30 AM. If you want to stay for the
duration of the trip, we will carpool from the Wolf Lake Fish
Hatchery parking lot, leaving at 7:30 AM. Or if you choose,
you can meet us at the north pier at about 8:15 AM. If it’s too
foul to go out on the north pier, we’ll watch from the beach or
the south pier.
This will be prime time for many species of ducks to be
migrating, and if the wind is from the southeast, there could be
some raptors moving north. A few species we should see are
Horned Grebe, Common Loon, Greater and Lesser Scaup, and
Red-breasted Merganser. Other possibilities include Redthroated
Loon, Long-tailed Duck, White-winged or Surf
Scoters. If it is a slow day, we’ll check an inland site or two,
for whatever might be present.
If you have a spotting scope, be sure to bring it. If you
don’t, that’s okay, there will be scopes to share. Most
important: while it may be a nice April day, you should be
prepared for it being cool, in fact there may still be icebergs
floating around on the lake. Be sure to dress windproof and
MUCH warmer than you think you should.
