May 25, 2024
Share some of Kent’s favorite birding experiences, starting with the dawn chorus along Swan Creek. We’ll hope to hear Whip-poor-wills singing and owls calling before dawn, with other songbirds joining as it starts to get light. We will have coffee and pastries to share. After daybreak, we will hike ½ to one mile along Swan Creek, looking for Worm-eating Warblers in their breeding territories. Finally, we will check the farm unit, hoping to find grassland species such as Bobolink, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Upland Sandpiper. Meet at the Oakland Drive/I-94 commuter lot at 4:15 AM to join the caravan, or meet onsite at the Swan Creek Double Tubes trailhead (116th Avenue just west of 44th Street, Allegan; 116th can be sketchy – approach from 44th Street only) at 5:00 AM. Yes, frightfully early, but no pain, no gain. Bring flashlights. For those who can’t bear the pre-dawn idea, please join us at the Swan Creek location at 8:00 AM for the daylight activities. Hiking will be light, on fairly level dirt trails, with the remainder being roadside birding along both gravel and paved country roads. Mosquito repellent is advised, and sunscreen may be required.
