Events Single Title March Program: The Meadowlark Conundrum - Why many of our restored grasslands may not have grassland birds

March 25, 2024

Grassland birds are in the steepest decline of any other habitat group in North America. In response to the continued loss of these incredible bird species and their habitat, many well-intentioned conservationists have reconstructed prairies to provide habitat for grassland specialists. But are their efforts working, and if not, how come? An ongoing breeding bird monitoring program on Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy preserves may shed some light on these challenges. We'll explore this conundrum and the wider efforts to save charismatic species like Bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks during this joint presentation.

Mitch Lettow, the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy's stewardship director, and Dr. Sharon Gill, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University, will present this program.
