Field trips and bird counts are held rain or shine; they are only cancelled in severe weather. Contact the leader listed or check the ASK Facebook page if conditions are questionable.

Please join us the first Saturday of each month at 9 AM (barring special events or bad weather which will be announced on our Facebook page), for "Beginning Birding Walks," led by experienced birders from the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo. This event is free and open to the public. Meet at the second parking lot at Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Mattawan, just off SR 43. All skill levels are welcome.

We will enjoy nature while typically identifying 20-40 species of birds, plus butterflies, frogs, etc. Over 200 bird species have been sighted at Wolf Lake, which offers a variety of habitats and easy walking trails. Annual highlights include colorful songbirds like orioles, warblers, tanagers, hawks and eagles, kingfishers, Great Blue and Green Herons, and over 20 species of waterfowl. Eastern Bluebirds can be found year-round! Children accompanying adults are welcome. The focus is on birding fundamentals, and extra binoculars are always available. The walk typically takes about 2 hours (but feel free to arrive late or leave early).

Event Description: 2.5 hour/5-mile paddle from WaterTrail Ventures to Hacklander Boat Launch in Saugatuck Township.Travel down river on gentle currents around Potawanami Marsh, encountering several species of birds and natural flora. Audubon Society of Kalamazoo will be providing leaders to identify birds. Great trip for beginner paddlers and bird watchers.
Pre-registration is required. Please register below.

Details:

  • Vessel drop off/check-in: Check-in begins at 8:00AM, bagels, coffee, and swag provided by KRWC. Guests with personal watercraft can drop equipment at launch location.
  • Vehicle shuttle provided: Yes, courtesy of WaterTrail Ventures. Guests with personal watercraft drop off vessel at launch, drive car to take out location and will be shuttled back. The last shuttle will leave the take out location at 9:30am. Guests who are renting vessels will be shuttled at the end of the paddle.
  • Launch: 10:00am from WaterTrail Ventures. Paddlers specifically interested in bird identification with an Audubon Society of Kalamazoo leader will launch as a separate group a few minutes later.
  • Take out: 12:30pm from Hacklander Boat Launch
  • Boat rentals: Available, please indicate on registration form and contact WaterTrail Ventures (269-547-1884) to reserve. Limited quantity is available. Discounted rates for event are available courtesy of WaterTrail Ventures, see below! 
    • Kayak Rentals: $15, seats 1, 300# weight cap
    • Canoe Rentals: $30, seats 2, 700# weight cap.
