Events Single Title Field Trip - Indiana Dunes State/National Park

April 26, 2025

Join us as we explore several birding hotspots in the parks along the southern edge of Lake Michigan, looking for spring migrants. These parks feature varied habitats including remnant prairie, black oak savanna, and the largest wetland complex in the Lake Michigan watershed. We’ll try to sample these while minimizing the total walking distance. Plan on walking 1-1.5 miles in each of three locations, or opt out on one or more if you prefer. Two of our locations are designated easy (level), and one is moderate (some dune slopes).

Meet at the Oakland Drive/I-94 park & ride at 7:00 AM for caravan arrangements, or meet us at the Indiana Dunes Beach Parking Lot (N 25 E/State Rd 49, Chesterton, IN 46304) at 8:45 AM. (See map below.)

Vehicle passes are required for entry to the parks. Several of us will have national park passes but will still need to pay a fee at the state park entrance (out-of-state vehicle $12). Some trails might be wet – bring boots, along with insect repellent. We will stop for lunch before returning and should be back in Kalamazoo by 3 PM.
